Youtube aka Google made my day today. They announced that by the end of the week that closed caption/subtitles will be available on most Youtube videos. The day has finally come. I think I've waited since the day that youtube.com because an internet hit for them to allow videos to be closed captioned. Who knows what they were waiting for? The technology? The support system? Who knows? All I know is that the timing is just right. It's not too late, nor is it too early. Why am I excited?

Because it's all automated.

How freaking cool is that? According to the NYtimes.com,
While the technology can insert captions only on English-language speech, Google is giving users the choice of using its automatic translation system to read the captions in 51 languages. That could broaden the appeal of YouTube videos to millions of other people who do not speak English but could use the captioning technology to read subtitles in their native language.
The speech recognition technology that Google uses to turn speech into text is not new; Google currently uses it to transcribe voice mail messages for users of its Google Voice service. But Ken Harrenstien, a deaf engineer who helped develop the automatic captioning system, said the technology had never been applied on such a large scale.
Now, I can not only watch major network shows/movies in closed caption, but I can watch my friends video in closed caption. Before it used to be an expensive venue to pay for closed caption, however, with the partnership between Google and Youtube, it's free! Besides, would you rather pay or use technology that you can get for free? I choose free.
