The following timeline proves your biggest fears…
Yet deaf have never had so many opportunities and never more access to communications than they have now, so some demise in deaf schools e.g. seems to be a positive in that respect. Perhaps you are pointing out culture has suffered, this may be true, but access and communication certainly hasn't. How many deaf would have been able to follow this 25 years ago ? Just look how many have simply deserted the deaf clubs, they would not do that if there was no alternatives they could use. Deaf are moving outward let's wish them luck...
ReplyDeleteThis is a confusing mishmash of articles, not a clear and coherent timeline. Are you complaining about deaf schools getting museums, deaf schools closing, or the education deaf people get in mainstreamed schools? And are you seriously stating that deaf education has declined in the last ten years? If anything, the advent and use of technology in the classroom has bettered both education and the product.
ReplyDelete@MM: Your observation that the opportunities and access that we have now is significantly far better than what we had ten years ago is correct. However, what I am trying to convey that there is a trend showing that Deaf Education as a whole has seen either very little and/or no significant improvement in the quality of teaching of deaf students in institution(s) specifically designed for deaf students in the last ten years.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous: What makes you think that I'm implying that I'm complaining about deaf schools getting museums, deaf school closing, or that deaf people are being encouraged to go to mainstream schools? Mishmash of articles or not, this is simply a timeline created using Google Search simply making an observation and based on that observation, I do believe that deaf education has declined in the last ten years. Nevertheless, that is not merely stating the obvious, since I agree that the incorporation of technology and significant better training of instructors has improved Deaf Education within the last few years.
