Day 68: 10 Things You Should Know About iOS 6

Last monday, Apple had their annual Apple Worldwide Developer Conference. As much as I would have loved to attended that conference, I had more important responsibilities that I need to take care of: grades :-) Nevertheless, what I love about the Internet is that I can always pick up from where I left off.

Some of you are wondering what exactly is new about the new iOS 6 that will be coming out this fall and of course, how does that help people who are deaf/hard of hearing? Well, I decided to take the ease your vertigo (or maybe the exact opposite to feed your vertigo!) by simplifying it for you.

Here's a rundown of 10 Things You Should Know About iOS6 (and how does that apply to people who are deaf/hard of hearing)!:

  1. FaceTime: Before, you could only use FaceTime on Wi-Fi networks. That's it. There was no other way to use FaceTime. Now with the iOS6, FaceTime now works over cellular networks as well as Wi-Fi, so you can make and receive FaceTime calls wherever you happen to be.  You can even make and receive FaceTime calls on your iPad using your phone number. According to Apple,
"that means you can use FaceTime wherever you are, on any device. And never miss another wink, smile, air kiss, or eye roll."!
Or in other words, you'll never miss a flailing sign! :-)
  2. PassBook: This is one of my favorite new functions of the iOS 6. Basically, this is your boarding passes, movie tickets, retail coupons, loyalty cards, and more are now all in one place. With Passbook, you can scan your iPhone or iPod touch to check in for a flight, get into a movie, and redeem a coupon or check the balance left on that all-important coffee bar card (aka Starbucks Gold card!). For me, that means no more phones calls and I can buy everything I need from my iPhone or iPod touch without having to talk to a human being or an automated machine (which is way worse than a human being for sure)!
  3. Made for iPhone Hearing Aid: (only for iPhone 4S) While this is exciting that they are incorporating this in the new iOS 6, the only downside is that only the iPhone 4S will have this function. I am bummed that this is not available for the iPhone 4 or the iPhone 3GS, I am, however, impressed that they're finally making progress to ensure that people with hearing aids will have, according to Apple,
    a power-efficient, high-quality digital audio experience.
  4. Apple Maps: The relationship between Google and Apple has been deteriorating for some time, so Apple has decided to further that relationship/partnership even further by incorporating their own new Apple Map. Before Apple did not have turn by turn functionality, but now by acquiring three map companies, they have designed from the ground up, Apple Maps now gives you turn-by-turn spoken directions, interactive 3D views, and the stunning Flyover feature. They also offer real-time traffic information:
With Maps, you get real-time traffic information to calculate your ETA. Maps gives you details on what’s causing a backup, so you can tell if there’s a major incident or just a temporary slowdown. And if traffic’s a mess, Maps offers alternative routes to save you time.
  5. Phone: The phone itself is a huge improvement, however, they still do not have visual voicemail available like Google Voice does. According to Apple, here are some of their new features:
iOS 6 adds new calling features to your iPhone. Now when you decline an incoming call, you can instantly reply with a text message or set a callback reminder. And when things are just too hectic, turn on Do Not Disturb and you won’t be bothered by anyone — except can’t-miss contacts like your boss or your better half.
  6. Find my Friends: This feature itself is not new; however, I myself, am a very visual person find this app useful. Texting to friends to find out where they are can be confusing at times since they sometimes have a hard time explaining how to get from one place to another. Find my Friends is a much easier way to figure out how to meet someone and to find each other when one gets lost or separated at huge events. What's new in iOS 6 for Find my Friends is that it comes with
"location-based alerts — like when your kids leave school or arrive home. Find My Friends can also notify others about your location, so you can stay connected or keep track of the ones you love."

  7. Camera: The iOS 6 will have more functionality for the camera! I can't wait to play with this as well. According to Apple, you will be able to:
Take advantage of the built-in camera’s advanced features. New APIs let you control focus, exposure, and region of interest. You can also access and display faces with face detection APIs, and leverage hardware-enabled video stabilization.
  8. China!: China has been one of the hottest buyers of Apple product in the world. So Apple is doing a intelligent job in making sure that they are thanking one of their largest customer bases by ensuring that they are getting the best of the best! Here's what they're getting:
With improved text input and built-in support for popular Chinese Internet services, iOS 6 makes iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch even better for Chinese-speaking users. With a new Chinese dictionary and improved text input, typing in Chinese is easier, faster, and more accurate. You can mix full and abbreviated Pinyin and even type English words in a Pinyin sentence without switching keyboards. With support for over 30,000 characters, iOS 6 more than doubles the number of Chinese characters supported in handwriting recognition. And when you add words to your personal dictionary, iCloud makes them available on all your devices. Baidu is a built-in option in Safari, and you can share videos directly to Youku and Tudou. You can also post to Sina Weibo from Camera, Photos, Maps, Safari, and Game Center.
  9. Facebook: I love Facebook. And now, with my iPad, it will be so much easier posting stuff on Facebook thanks to the new iOS 6. Here's what Apple has to say,
"Share a photo to Facebook right from Camera or Photos. Post your location right from Maps. Brag about a high score right from Game Center. If you have your hands full, just ask Siri to post for you."!
You know what? I will brag about my high score! :-)
  10. iOS 6: Best part about iOS 6: it's all free! :)
